(This story has been corrected to change the description of the deal in the third paragraph to show it was a licensing deal, not a distribution deal.)

When Justin Ross first showed Keith Caggiano his business plan in 2005, Caggiano thought he was joking. Inspired by a Brazilian girlfriend, Ross, a former portfolio manager at New York City hedge fund Millennium Partners, wanted to start a sex toy distribution business.

Ross eventually persuaded Caggiano, a serial entrepreneur he knew through a mutual friend, to make the leap with him, and the duo invested $120,000 in combined personal savings and a loan from Ross’s parents. Today the 20-employee Torrance (Calif.) company, which imports most of its products from China, is profitable. Ross projects $15 million in revenue this year, mostly through adult novelty retailers and online.

Screaming O's desire now is to sell through mainstream channels while maintaining its racy branding. In late 2009, Walgreens signed a licensing deal to sell one of Screaming O's brands in 7,000 drugstores. Their products, with bright, explicit packaging, are also sold through Amazon.com, Drugstore.com, and RiteAid.com, as well as stores in 27 foreign countries. “We stand right at the edge. We want to market and brand ourselves as a company that sells fun,” Ross says, “without becoming so demure" that customers overlook the products.

It’s a tricky balance to achieve. Trojan, which has sold condoms for more than eight decades, first introduced vibrators to its product line a year ago. It’s taking a low-key approach, with television commercials that feature girlfriends chuckling knowingly over their “personal massagers” and packaging designed to disappear on the grocery store conveyor belt. In contrast, with a name like Screaming O, Ross, 38, and Caggiano, 44, can hardly be accused of subtlety.

“When people see our brand, the barriers go down and we melt their defenses,” says Caggiano....

GoDaddy bows to boycott, now 'opposes' SOPA copyright bill

"Dump GoDaddy Day" appears to have worked.
GoDaddy, the domain register targeted by online activists in response to its enthusiasm for a pair of

Hollywood-backed copyright bills, has finally denounced the legislation in response to a boycott scheduled for today.

Warren Adelman, the company's chief executive, said today that "GoDaddy opposes SOPA," meaning the Stop Online Piracy Act, which is facing a House of Representatives committee vote next month.
A GoDaddy spokeswoman confirmed to CNET this afternoon that "we oppose PIPA, as well." That's the Senate bill known as Protect IP, which will be debated on the Senate floor January 24. (See CNET's SOPA FAQ.)

The idea of boycotting GoDaddy began with a protest thread on Reddit and was aided by Jimmy Wales' announcement last week that "Wikipedia domain names will move away from GoDaddy." It inspired GoDaddyBoycott.org, which urged Internet users and companies to "boycott GoDaddy until they send a letter to Congress taking back any and all support of the House and Senate versions of the Internet censorship bill, both SOPA and PIPA."

GoDaddy did itself few favors by only saying it no longer supported SOPA -- but pointedly not criticizing it -- and declining to answer questions from CNET and customers who asked for further clarification. Accusations of interfering with customers' attempts to leave, which appear to have arisen from a misunderstanding, didn't help.

Neither did gleeful attempts by competitors to lure away GoDaddy customers. At least half a dozen GoDaddy rivals responded with anti-SOPA promotions: NameCheap dubbed December 29 "move your domain" day, offering below-cost transfers with the coupon "SOPASUCKS" plus a $1 donation to the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Other registrars such as Dreamhost, HostGator, Hover.com, and Name.com have offered similar anti-SOPA promotions. NameCheap even offered step-by-step instructions titled: "How to transfer a domain from GoDaddy."

After GoDaddy began to back away from SOPA last week, customers-turned-activists demanded a full repudiation. A discussion thread on GoDaddy's support forums said: "Until GoDaddy gets a clue and changes their stance to being opposed to all SOPA-like legislation... my business and I and our network of influence will continue to boycott you."

Today's newly contrite statement from Adelman, the CEO, did just that:

We have observed a spike in domain name transfers, which are running above normal rates and which we attribute to GoDaddy's prior support for SOPA, which was reversed. GoDaddy opposes SOPA because the legislation has not fulfilled its basic requirement to build a consensus among stake-holders in the technology and Internet communities. Our company regrets the loss of any of our customers, who remain our highest priority, and we hope to repair those relationships and win back their business over time.

SOPA, of course, represents the latest effort from Hollywood's movie and recording studios and their allies to counter what they view as rampant piracy on the Internet, especially at offshore sites such as ThePirateBay.org. It would allow the Justice Department to force search engines, Internet providers, and other companies to make a suspected piratical Web site effectively vanish, a kind of Internet death penalty. It's opposed (PDF) by many Internet companies and Internet users, who often cite free speech concerns.

Before this public relations debacle, GoDaddy had been an enthusiastic supporter of expanding copyright law to deal with "parasite" Web sites. In testimony (PDF) before a House of Representatives hearing this spring, GoDaddy general counsel Christine Jones endorsed Domain Name System (DNS) blocking as a way to prevent Americans from accessing suspected piratical Web sites.

Jones said that DNS blocking is an "effective strategy for disabling access to illegal" Web sites. It can "be done by the registrar (which provides the authoritative DNS response), or, in cases where the registrar is unable or unwilling to comply, by the registry (which provides the Root zone file records -- the database -- for the entire TLD)," she said.

Is Vanessa Blue responsible for Roxy Reynolds being banned from Britain?

(Monica Foster commentary - It appears that Roxy Reynolds has been banned from entering Britain - apparently she was traveling to the UK to do a "tour" of which was advertised on her escort agency's site and her twitter (that site appears to be www.theXXXagent.com which seems to be operated by Vanessa Blue) and she was stopped by the UK border agency. Upon investigation it appears that Roxy's agent may be Vanessa Blue - way to go Vanessa - first your boyfriend Michael Fattorosi assists with Pornwikileaks and get's AIM shut down and now this..)

courtesy of AdultFYI.com

from www.thesun.co.uk - A "BOOTYLICIOUS" porn star has been banned from entering Britain, it was revealed yesterday.

Roxy Reynolds — famed for her big bottom and voted one of 2010's top adult film performers — was set to earn a fortune over the festive season, working as a high-class escort to Premier League footballers, actors and senior figures in central London.

But the model and rapper was stopped by UK Border Agency officers when she landed at Heathrow from Philadelphia.

The 27-year-old was using a visitors' visa that didn't entitle her to work. But border staff had found her "London Tour" advertised on escort agency websites and Twitter.

One blurb read: "This US XXX star is one of the most prolific and popular ebony ladies in the industry. You will LOVE your time with her."

Another said of £550-an-hour Roxy: "She really knows how to move... and her naughty attitude will leave you drained."

A UKBA spokesman said: "A US national was refused entry on December 18 and returned to the USA the next day."

A source added: "A lot of Roxy clients will feel let down this Christmas."

Condoms In Porn Measure Qualifies For The Ballot

HIV/AIDS activists are one step closer to mandating condom use in adult films now that the Los Angeles City Clerk has officially verified the gathered signatures on a proposed ballot measure, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The measure, championed by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, would require filmmakers to agree to use condoms on their sets in order to obtain a city permit for filming.

Suny Cho, a city clerk staffer, confirmed to the Huffington Post that the city notified petition organizers that the measure was received and the signatures verified with random sampling, which qualifies it for placement on a ballot. The measure gathered more than 70,000 signatures, almost twice the 41,000 signatures required.

From there, the petition must be presented to the Los Angeles City Council, which has twenty days to take action on the measure in one of three ways: immediately adopt the ordinance on all terms, schedule a special election or add the ballot measure to a previously scheduled election. The council has yet to be notified, as city staff are on furlough.

The measure is likely to be appended to the June 2012 elections, according to the LA Times.

Before the measure secures a place on the ballot, however, it faces a legal challenge by the city of Los Angeles. In early December, the City Attorney's office filed a lawsuit that would prevent the measure from ever making it on the ballot, claiming that the proposition would be a waste of taxpayer money and interfere with state-mandated health and safety codes already in place.

In an Associated Press article about the lawsuit, AIDS Healthcare Foundation president Michael Weinstein refuted the city's claim that the ballot measure would be a waste of money, as elections are already scheduled for June 2012. "I'm not an elections scholar," said Weinstein, "but I'm not aware of prior restraint on voter's ability to have their voices heard on an initiative."

Record 300-plus porn actresses set for AVN Adult Entertainment Expo

(courtesy of the LasVegasSun.com)
With more than 300 porn princesses already registered for next month’s AVN Adult Entertainment Expo, organizers of the Jan. 18-21 adults-only events at the Hard Rock Hotel safely predict that it will be an all-time record turnout of tantalizing temptresses -- and the list is still growing.

“It’s the largest collection of adult stars to attend an event all under one roof at the same time. It will also be one of the biggest expos that’s ever taken place,” said Theo Sapoutzis, AVN chief executive.

The talent list, which has to be the industry’s largest Rolodex of names, includes Amber Ashlee, Zoe Voss, Brittney Blaze, Kimberly Kane, Madelyn Monroe, Samantha Saint and Tyler Tanner. Former adult superstars Jenna Jameson and Tera Patrick are not expected -- at least not yet.

The four-day convention is capped with the Jan. 21 awards, and co-hosts Bree Olson -- Playboy cover model and Charlie Sheen’s former goddess -- and Sunny Leone are naturally included, but regular Las Vegas visitor Ron Jeremy is one of only two men on the list so far.

Dennis Hoff comes to the realization that Earth Girl Are Just to Easy for Earth Guys

A Nevada brothel owner is to open a Sci-Fi themed hooker house for men who want to bed women from out of this world.

Dennis Hof's newest Southern Nevada business venture, The Area 51 Alien Cathouse, will see him reopen a rundown brothel with a new science fiction theme promising potential customers 'girls from another planet'.

The reality television star, well known for the HBO show on his brothel the Moonlite Bunny Ranch, has purchased a site northwest of Las Vegas, reported the Las Vegas Journal Review.

He plans to transform the old Chery Patch brothel and adjoining gas station, bar and convenience store, into the the Area 51 Alien Travel Center.

The alien themed center, located just south of the area formerly known as the Nevada Test Site, is expected to open in the next few months.

It will feature its own line of merchandise featuring little green people and staff at the center and women in the brothel will wear specially made alien costumes.

Former Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss is taking care of costumes and decor for the venue.

Sex Toy Designer Screaming O Pushes Past Novelty Shops into Walgreens Aisles

(Monica Foster commentary - so I guess it's not enough for the FSC to not get on board to protect children from adult content on the internet by supporting the .xxx movement - they have to take it a step further by encouraging one of their supporters, Caggiano, to put his adult toys right in the face of children when their parents take them to walgreens to pick up their school supplies...I wonder if the Screaming O novelties will be in the same isle as the kids toys - toys for tots and toys for adults - do they go hand in hand? We'll see...)

from www.bloomberg.com - When Justin Ross [pictured right] first showed Keith Caggiano [pictured left] his business plan in 2005, Caggiano thought he was joking.

“When people see our brand, the barriers go down and we melt their defenses,” says Caggiano, who developed the company’s online advertising and offline promotions, which mostly center on sponsoring international sporting events, spring-break hot spots, and safe sex forums on college campuses. “We want to find a way to help people be comfortable with themselves and their sexuality,” he says.

Despite cultural bias and a handful of states that ban the sales of sex toys under obscenity laws, the duo is adamant that mainstream America will buy its wares. Hamilton Beach patented the first electric vibrator in 1902, about a decade before it introduced the electric iron and vacuum cleaner. Surveys from 2009 conducted by Indiana University and the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, & Reproduction show more than half of women and nearly half of men ages 18 to 60 reported using a vibrator either alone or with a partner.

Accurate revenue numbers for the entire adult industry are elusive, since business research firms do not track the market. Joanne Cachapero, communications director at the Free Speech Coalition, an adult industry trade group, says that until five years ago, the industry estimated its own revenues at $14 billion worldwide. But overall revenues are down about 30 percent since 2008, she says, led by a 50 percent drop in DVD sales. A handful of outside research studies a decade ago put total U.S. adult revenues between $1 billion and $4 billion.

Dave Levine, a 43-year-old Los Angeles man who founded $13 million sex toy wholesaler CNV.com in 1995, estimates the U.S. sex toy business alone at $750 million to $1 billion annually. His 25-employee company supplies products and also does direct sales through SexToy.com. He says adult film companies are now getting into novelties in a “big way,” partly to make up for revenue lost to piracy and the availability of free porn online.

Ross and Caggiano’s first product was a pack of disposable vibrating rings priced as an impulse buy at $5. The two men began attending adult industry trade shows and found distribution at adult novelty retailers on the third try, when they secured one-on-one meetings with 27 distributors at the Pasadena Novelty Expo in 2005. By the end of the show, they had $70,000 worth of orders, but only $10,000 worth of product in a guest house garage. “We had to spend $18,000 in air freight from China to fill those first orders,” Ross recalls. But once the product hit retail shelves, “it started steamrolling. We paid off all our debt within nine months.”

Screaming O’s newest line, The Studio Collection, could appeal to merchandising managers at big-box retailers, the duo hopes. With cleverly disguised packaging, the collection hides sex toys in lipsticks, eye shadow, and face powder containers. The collection includes high-quality materials and stylish designs that justify a higher price point and higher margins than Screaming O's earlier merchandise, Ross says.

Screaming O is frequently approached by competitors — it estimates that half a dozen companies are in the same business — pitching mergers and investors inquiring about getting a piece of the action, Caggiano says. The partners want to stay independent for now, convinced, Caggiano says, that “our brand has the potential to make a space for itself in pop culture.”

BCCC cautions Colors on Sunny Leone promoting her 'business'

(Monica Foster commentary: It looks like Desi Foxx was correct - India does not want their daughters driven into the deadly sea of PORN)

courtesy ibnlive.in.com

New Delhi, Dec 26 (PTI) In the wake of complaints over appearance of porn star Sunny Leone in TV reality show Big Boss, the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) has asked TV channel Colors to ensure that she does not use the programme to promote her "pornography business". Sources said that the issue was discussed at a meeting of the BCCC on Friday where several complaints regarding Leone's appearance on the TV show came up.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had also forwarded some of the complaints to the BCCC. "The issue was discussed and there were around nineteen complaints related to Leone's appearance on the show. But there did not seem any content related violation from Leone's presence on the show," said an official who is aware of the developments.

Officials said that though the Indo-Canadian porn actor Leone had not indulged in violations during her stint in the show and her pornography business too was based outside India over which the BCCC does not have jurisdiction, BCCC did object to Leone using her appearance on the Indian TV show as promotional material on her own websites.

BCCC officials said that they had told Colors management to ask Leone not to indulge in cross promotion of Big Boss or the Channel Colors etc. and have all the links which connect her website to her appearance on the Indian TV show removed as early as possible. Officials said that this did not mean that Leone would not be allowed to appear on the show but she would not be allowed to use it to promote her "pornography business". PTI ADS

Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif wants to be like pornstar Sunny Leone! Alleged Sex Tape Video Released

http://celebs.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474980947596

(Monica Foster commentary - hmmm...considering how competitive Bollywood actresses are, I have a feeling many "sex tapes" will be "leaked" due to Sunny Leone's arrival on the Bollywood scene.)
Is Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif part of a porn scandal? Those are the latest rumors as an alleged sex tape video has been released. The news of this has the actress "fuming" over the gossip. So is it the real deal or a fake?

Just after a real Katrina Kaif sexy video, it appears that now a fake one has shown up online. According to One India's report, the porn video has just recently surfaced online, but is already a "hot property" after several hours. It doesn't feature the real Katrina Kaif having sex on video, but instead a look-alike in ponytails and Indian jewelry. The woman on the tape strips down before engaging in sexual acts with several men.

Pakistan's Veen Malik might find this latest news upsetting, because it's taking away from her spotlight. However, this recent news development really has Katrina Kaif outraged, as she commented on the porn tape scandal, saying:

"The video is disgusting and the girl clearly doesn't even look like me. There's no room for any speculation whatsoever. How can you even call her my look alike? The girl's face is completely different! I think it's ridiculous to even talk about it."

Apparently the video creators didn't have the budget for a better actress, or CGI! Just recently, Katrina was part of the sexy song and dance item that was released online. She's among the hottest Bollywood celebs so it makes sense that there is such a fuss over this. While this seems like a scandal that Veena Malik might have been part of, it will be interesting to see if Katrina Kaif goes further with legal action against whichever company or people created the video.

So who reserved Vatican.XXX ?

By Gabe LaMonica, CNN

(CNN) - The Internet is the grapevine. A Vatican spokesman's comments on radio this week led news organizations to report that the Vatican had lost its bid for Vatican.xxx, a coupling of the Vatican and the ".xxx" extension now reserved for pornographic content.

"This domain is not available because it has been acquired by someone else, but not the Vatican," the Rev. Federico Lombardi said on Vatican radio.

But that turns out not to be the case. On the contrary, the domain is reserved specifically for no one.

"Vatican.xxx is a name that is on the permanent reserve list, so it was pulled out of the registry before the launch," said Jocelyn Johnson, a representative for ICM Registry, the company operating the new dot-triple-X domain as a voluntary option for pornographic sites.

"No one is able to purchase that name," she said.

Hijacking names for websites is an all-too-common practice.

For example, "the Democrats own Newtgingrich.com," said the Rev. Tom Reese, referring to a site that redirects, in one instance, to an article titled, "Gingrich 'Inadvertently' Names Porn Company 'Entrepreneur of the Year' For Stimulating the Economy."

Schoolchildren searching for whitehouse.com on the internet found porn in the late 1990s, and "the bottom line is it's almost impossible to protect yourself from this kind of stuff," said Reese, a Jesuit at Georgetown University.

"There are too many possible domain names," he said.

"Vatican girls.xxx, Vatican sluts.xxx, it's almost infinite - to say nothing of all the obscene words you can put together and all the words not only after but before Vatican. It's just an impossible task to defend yourself from this kind of stuff," he said.

The ICM Registry developed the dot-triple-X domain to provide a compromise between those who wish to provide access to pornographic material and those who wish to prevent access to it.

Will Christmas Defeat Porn This Year?

1:30AM Today | Sam Biddle
Most people only care about Christmas for a few weeks out of every year, but porn is on our minds every day. But what’s this? Each year “Christmas” briefly eclipses “porn” on Google? Will purity reign? Not this year, baby.
As the Atlantic’s Alexis Madrigal points out, Christmas has surpassed porn every year for the past seven years — a pretty reliable trend, no? But look at this year’s data and you’ll see things are a little off. The Christmas resurgence has been in steady decline since 2004, picked back up for a couple of years and now looks like it very well may not top porn at all. Mostly, because we’re searching for porn a lot more than we were seven years ago. (Side note: who Googles “porn”?)
So who will prevail? If you’re incredibly bored this Christmas, keep refreshing Google Trends. It’s a pretty win-win matchup if you ask me. [Google Trends via The Atlantic]

CONFIRMED - A New Case of HPV from Porn Valley, This Time With Possible Cancer

courtesy PornInTheValley.com

Yes, it's true. I've personally reviewed the medical report that shows this 20 something female performer has been diagnosed with HPV and has pre-cancerous cells that are only one level away from being full on Cancer. Thanks to my bringing this to everyone's attention, she went for a checkup and it was caught just in time.

Here's what she has to look forward to: Pregnancy accelerates HPV and Cancer so to have children now, she will risk her life. If she does have children, she will most likely have a cesearian birth so that the HPV does not pass to the baby at birth. She will need to have her children soon and then she will need to have a total hysterectomy to be sure the Cancer doesn't kill her. All this and it may still kill her. We can only pray for her safety and good health!

She worked in the industry at the same time as the other 3 female performers that I've reported about recently. Two are dying of cancer RIGHT NOW. The 3rd lost her ability to have children FOREVER and she's only in her 20s. This makes 4 ACTIVE CASES OF CANCER IN VARIOUS STAGES attacking female performers that worked in porn during the mid to late 2000s. The young woman I spoke to is no longer working in porn so you don't have to worry about catching anything from her. What you DO have to worry about is WHO DID ALL THESE GIRLS GET HPV FROM WITH A MALIGNANT STRAIN OF CANCER ATTACHED??

Performing in porn under the current and ILLEGAL "No Protection" mentality is taking away young women's ability to have children and is causing them to die at a very young age.

Save these sons and daughters from a guaranteed early death from working in the porn industry where they care more about their profits than the performers who they get rich exploiting.

Contact these politicians and tell them America wants them to stop the rape, abuse, stalking, sterility and death of our sons and daughers!!

I saved a life today. What will you do??

Hot new male talent at LA Direct Models - Take a good look at Jason Minds

courtesy LaDirectModels.com
Editorial by Monica Foster

Although I am far from being an active talent (I haven't shot a scene since 2009), I do like to keep abreast of the meat locker in Porn Valley. Today as I was skimming through the talent rosters of various Los Angeles porn talent agencies one young man really caught my eye.

courtesy LaDirectModels.com
Jason Minds - there's just something about this guy, that I can't quite put my finger on.  Something tells me that there's more to him, than meets the eye... afterall, there'd have to be considering that he's signed with the wildly successful La Direct Models.

Lets look at his stats - 5'9", alabaster skin, a Legolas / elvish like build... what's there not to like about this 25 year old?

courtesy LaDirectModels.com

If you're a content producer or casting agent make sure you give LA Direct Models a call to book Jason - keep in mind, they probably are understaffed as of current considering their latest press release seeking new agents - but as long as you ask for Mr. Hey - you should be able to get Jason on board with your newest adult project - regardless of how private of a project it is.

Lawyer Demands Twitter Stop Porn Peddlers From Tweeting Disney Characters and Porn to Children

From the blog of Will Ryder who DEPICTED a minor (Rudy) in
Not the Cosbys XXX 2 - here he is not TWEETING but
BLOGGING Disney terms like "tinker-bell".
Why? For web traffic from children?
courtesy Sacbee.com

As millions of children get ready to open their iPhones, iPads, and other smart devices Christmas morning, SkM Consulting sent an urgent "tweet" and letter to Twitter's CEO demanding that the popular social networking site immediately delete Twitter profiles targeting children with hardcore pornography.

Skillful Means Consulting (SkM), led by lawyer Craig Perra and his wife Michelle, discovered that pornographers are exploiting Twitter's weak and poorly enforced antiporn policy and describe their findings, "Twitter is overflowing with hardcore pornography with no real restrictions to prevent child access." Attorney Perra states, "If you have an email address, Twitter gives you access to porn."

The social networking site "supports more than 100 million active users, who fire off 250 million daily tweets," says Laura Segall at CNNMoney in her December 19, 2011 article. "Children use the site," says Attorney Perra, "and it is clear that pornographers know this, too. Twitter's porn problem is prolific. It compromises future investment and advertising dollars from legitimate companies."

"Porn peddlers tweet kid-friendly search terms like Disney, Toy Story, Bieber, Tinkerbell, along with pornography links, explicit language, and graphic pictures (#disneyporn)," says Perra, founder of vicereport.com.

Twitter Stalker Is Free to Tweet, Federal Judge Rules

courtesy: By Rhett Pardon - Xbiz.com

In a defeat to prosecutors hoping to put tight reins on free speech over the Internet, a federal judge has dismissed a criminal case against a man accused of Twitter stalking.

The ruling focused on 18 U.S.C § 2261A(2)(A), a statute that was amended five years ago to make it a federal crime to "cause substantial emotional distress" by harassment over interactive computer services, among other conduct.

U.S. Judge Roger W. Titus, who ruled in the case, called the federal law "facially invalid" and dismissed charges against William Lawrence Cassidy, who the government accused of harassing and distressing Buddhist religious leader Alyce Zeoli with “uncomfortable” speech on Twitter.

The FBI discovered more than 8,000 messages predicting catastrophic disasters for Zeoli and her group, with tweets like, “Do the world a favor and go kill yourself. P.S. Have a nice day.”

Officers didn’t arrest Cassidy for his opinions, the Justice Department said, but because his tweets caused Zeoli “substantial emotional distress.”

But Titus ruled that the difference between Twitter and communication targeting an individual, like a phone call or an email, is that Twitter is more like a bulletin board, which can be disregarded.

“While Mr. Cassidy’s speech may have inflicted substantial emotion distress, the government’s indictment here is directed squarely as protected speech: anonymous, uncomfortable Internet speech addressing religious matters,” Titus ruled.

Free speech advocates, including those in the adult entertainment who rely on Internet connsumer marketing, B2B deal-making and industry communication, scored the ruling as a win, just and proper.

Adult industry attorney Marc Randazza told XBIZ that "part of the cost of living in a free society is that you have to endure annoying people and annoying speech."

"It seems bad enough when people waste the courts' time with civil claims that are really nothing more than someone being butthurt about someone else exercising their free speech rights," he said. "It is even more troubling when the government gets into the business of doing so."

Matt Zimmerman, a senior staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which filed a friend-of-the-court brief in this case, said no speaker should be threatened with prosecution — let alone held in jail as Mr. Cassidy was here — on the basis of allegations of offensive speech.

"Speech on social networking sites — as with speech anywhere — has the potential to inform and enlighten as well as to outrage," Zimmerman said. "It is imperative that courts recognize and uphold 1st Amendment protections in order to give all manner of expression sufficient breathing space to thrive online."

FSC to Host Legal Panel at XBIZ LA With Top Industry Attorneys

courtesy Xbiz.com
XBIZ, The Industry Source, is pleased to announce that adult industry trade association Free Speech Coalition will be hosting a special legal panel featuring renowned legal experts at leading digital media conference XBIZ LA.
According to FSC Board Chair Jeffrey Douglas, who will moderate the panel, the highly anticipated session will discuss the top legal issues that adult entertainment businesses can expect to contend with in 2012 — including patent trolls, emerging TLDs, copyright infringement and evolving OSHA regulations, among other critical topics.
The legal workshop is set to be one of the key highlights of XBIZ LA 2012, slated for Jan. 9-12 at the luxurious Sofitel Hotel in Los Angeles. The event’s premier sponsors include CE Cash, RedPass, PussyCash, Adult Webmaster Empire, EroAdvertising, GTBill, Fleshlight, Signature Card Services and Sofort. XBIZ LA coincides with the blockbuster 10th annual XBIZ Awards show, set for Jan. 10 at the legendary Barker Hangar, and presented by MyFreeCams.com.
The legal panel is scheduled for Jan. 10 at 4 p.m.
FSC Executive Director Diane Duke told XBIZ that with the introduction of new gTLDs and the roll out of .XXX, it is important for adult businesses to understand their options for protecting their brand and traffic.
Beyond this front-burner issue, however, are other concerns.
“Patent trolls have been knocking on the doors of adult businesses trying to leech money out of these companies with bogus patent claims,” Duke explained. “How can we as an industry work together to fight this drain on adult businesses?”
“[And] what is up with mandatory condoms?” she asked. “Who is behind this relentless yet ridiculous effort — is it a city issue, a state issue, or federal?”
The legal panel will address all of these issues and more.

Desi Foxx speaks: Let's Set the Record Straight with a Few Facts - Welcome to "Porn Valley 101" - A History Lesson Begins

courtesy of PornInTheValley.com

First, let me say a huge "Thank You" to all of you sending in your support and positive energy. As warriors against evil, we need all the light and positive energy we can get. Please continue to follow what is happening against me and others speaking out against Porn Valley. It takes a society to make changes in our world. Help us make the world a better place by ridding it of this evil called Porn Valley!!

I decided I should give an explanation as to why I've decided to come back into the ring and take this battle full on again with my writing and quick wit I mean, my life is going good these days and it would be so much easier to just move on and not look back, right?? Ha, YOU KNOW ME BETTER THAN THAT LOL!!

I originally had to step back and heal. Cyberstalking is a horrendous crime against humanity that takes a toll on its' victims no matter how strong they are. When you are a good person and someone attacks you, it can be difficult to understand, at the very least. Then when it continues to such a sick extreme, you feel like you can't escape it so your life is over. Well, I'm here to say it's NOT!! Now that I have taken time to heal and understand what happened to us that day, November 9th, 2007, when the porn industry recruited my daughter, life has never been the same and it won't be but that's okay with me now. My life is very different but it's much better actually. I've got thousands of friends now that are out there who got my back and I'm making the world a better place. What could be better than that??

So, here I am. What brought me back? My good friend, Monica Foster, did by default. I've watched the porn industry do to her what they did to me. We thought it was over when they took down PWL but now they've built a new stalker hate site. I decided I can't let Monica go this alone again so here I am!!

A little history lesson. Monica was recruited by the same agent as we were. Brian Berkinfeld from Girlz Inc. now known as AMA. He and Karen Stephens had the perfect porn operation. A woman to recruit and make you feel safe and then Brian to double talk you into doing things differently than what was started.

We met the first time in a hotel room in Porn Valley after Brian had taken a group of girls there to work. My daughter happened to be one of them. She and Monica bunked together and Monica helped watch out for her. Monica ended up watching over her for me on many occassions of which I'm eternally grateful for. This was no different than any of the other trips to LA in that my daughter called crying saying she wanted to come home because she couldn't take the abuse and craziness in Los Angeles but Brian wouldn't let her leave.

The issue that pushed her over was she had witnessed a model shooting heroin and she was supposed to shoot with that girl the next day...

What ever happened to the Tupac Sex Tape?

courtesy TheHollywoodGossip.com

The absurd Tupac sex tape unearthed earlier this year has been sold, but only to a private collector who has no plans to make the 1991 footage public.

According to reports, the former owner of the tape decided not to sell to any corporate sex companies, describing them as "parasites." How virtuous.

It is unknown how much the 2Pac video sold for, but it was reported that two rival porn agencies were ready to pay $150,000 or more for the Tupac sex tape.

Tupac's family have made it clear they do not want the X-rated flick to be distributed and have insisted that they "will sue anyone who tries to sell a Tupac tape."

According to an official spokesman for Tupac's estate, only his family can authorize the use of Tupac's image for commercial use and they would not permit this.

The rapper's mother Afeni Shakur has also reportedly told her representatives: "Get the legal team ready because we will not allow someone to put it out."

Looks like a moot point now. The footage of Tupac getting serviced orally by some girl at a house party while smoking, drinking and dancing to his own music will be enjoyed by a private collector for personal use only. Which is sort of odd.

What Do The Cards Have in Store for Leo Jeff Mullen?

courtesy of AdultCyberMart.com

As a musician, Mullen, aka director Will Ryder, has had a lot of experience with re-invention. Mullen toured with a number of groups on the road and had that going for nearly 15 years.

[Mullen was with the Boyz II Men tour and worked with the Backstreet Boys, All For One and the MC Hammer tour among others.]

When the music industry collapsed similarly the way that porn is following suit, Mullen, born July 31st, gravitated to the adult industry.

That’s because it allowed him to satisfy his two major cravings- music and naked women. July 31st Leos, by the way are very highly amped in the sex department. The Leo male is generally attracted to the young willowy types. If married, he has a marvelous knack for juggling extramarital affairs.

Mullen got his start in the adult industry on the PR side. The Leo male is very well suited to this occupation what with their personality and gift of gab. But where some other signs are all country club and show with no go, the Leo with his impeccable organizational skills follows through, rolls up his sleeves and gets things accomplished.

Detail oriented, the Leo male like the Cancerian woman will pester you repeatedly to make sure things are good on your end. The Leo male watches and observes closely, and, by doing so, figure out ways of making a bigger and better mousetrap.

From industry PR man with New Sensations, Mullen, the typical risk-taking Leo, made the broad jump into video production and is considered by many to be King of the Parodies. Essentially it was Mullen who re-vitalized interest in that genre by creating the Britney Rears trademark which so spawned its many carbon copies.

The self-confident, sometimes cocky Leo male, will let you know in no uncertain times that he’s an innovator; and so it seems only natural that Mullen following the path of the Leo male’s strong ego, toots his horn at every available opportunity. Image is very important to the Leo male.

The July 31st Leo is also a trendsetter and can be highly dramatic at times. But it’s all a part of the show or stage performance to get his point across. More often than not, however, the Leo male’s misunderstood for these traits.

Because they always have their wits about them, the Leo prsence is good to have around in emergencies. And they are lovers of music and probably own astounding personal libraries devoted to this passion.

With his gift for the funny line, the ballsy, sometimes brash Leo male often flirts with the world of comedy and can make a humorous quip just at the right moment to ease the tension. With his finesse, he’s a great diplomat and negotiator; and his swaggering grace makes him a good catch in the romantic department. Women are attracted to the bravado of the Leo male who can be a notorious skirt chaser. To that extent, the Leo man is extravagantly romantic, and experiences a tumultuous love life.

Gentle in almost all instances, the Leo male, when crossed can, likewise, let out a roar typical of his lion’s namesake. His bark is that old cliché, often worse than his bite. As an employer, they do not like to be crossed nor have their authority questioned. The Leo is also astute in judging the talent or untapped talent of others and takes pride in bringing that to the surface.

The negative aspect of the Leo personality is that he has a tendency to sulk, but a good-looking dame can certainly bring them out of their funk in a hurry. In later life Leo’s are prone to throat disorders particularly esophageal spasms and acid reflux.

Because they enjoyed the outdoors in their youth, skin cancer may be another issue to contend with. Good advice to them is don’t smoke, stay indoors and go lightly on the spicy foods.

For Mullen’s reading his “Draw” card is The Four of Cups, a card reflective of mood, temperament or an occasion. Or all of the above. The Four of Cups tells us we’re either bored or indifferent or feel mentally beaten up.

Finding a convenient island retreat and a gallon of Margaritas [watch out for that acid reflux] might be an impractical solution at the moment, however.

Leo’s are probably the best at feeling sorry for themselves and thus wear their hearts on their sleeve. This is what the Four of Cups is all about.

When a Leo’s in a funk you know about it. It’s written all over their faces. Sometimes the Four of Cups means you’ve extended yourself to another and gotten nowhere.

That being the case, the Leo male doesn’t abide rejection very well and so it puts them in a dither. In Mullen’s reading The Queen of Wands is aspected, and so we’d have to believe part of what we’re seeing is woman-related. She could be a fellow Leo, an Aries or a Sagittarius. Not to pry, but is this someone Mullen’s been living with or considering?

The Queen of Wands is always a looker, undoubtedly has great legs which is her strong suit, and so we admire Mullen’s taste. She’s a woman who loves wine and good times. She’s definitely a partyer.

But the Queen of Wands also uses her symbolic club as a weapon. She likes to pit her femininity against the male’s masculinity. These are women who can drive you absolutely nuts in more ways than one and enjoy doing so. Thus they enjoy playing the game.

The Ace of Pentacles in Mullen’s reading means that the beginning of winter opens new vistas and presents fresh approaches for making a buck. Let’s just say Mullen’s alter ego Will Ryder will be directing for some new companies. But the hand that offers can just as quickly be snatched away, so Mullen’s advised to make sure this is all in writing and to be cautious.

Is there a lease or a down payment on some property also being considered? If so The Devil card warns you this might not be a good idea right now because too many things could go wrong.

In fact from what I’ve been seeing in other readings, the whole period of Capricorn [December 21st to January 21st] could be one of Keystone Kops mishaps and misadventure. The Ten of Cups with The Devil Card says I’m probably right about the property, although now is not a good time to consider money spent in large amounts.

The end of January, after the 21st as represented by “The Hermit” gives all of us better perspective and allows us to see more clearly and rationally.

In his overall reading I see Mullen receiving news about someone he knows being arrested and incarcerated.

Anti-Porn's greatest secret weapon - Michael Whiteacre

(courtesy of the Michael Whiteacre fan blog: http://MrWhiteacre.blogspot.com )

Michael Whiteacre is an inspiration to every Anti-Porn activist! In fact, he's considered an Anti-Porn SUPER Activist in certain circles.

Michael Whiteacre is an unusual case - he's a man who is so Pro-Porn that he's come full circle to being ANTI-PORN!

Though on the surface he appears to be a staunch porn industry supporter being that he is closely affiliated with the Free Speech Coalition (FSC) and is the creator of "The Devil and Shelley Lubben" - all of his "pro - porn" efforts in actuality are thoroughly calculated efforts (from his incredibly diabolical sub-conscience) to sabotage the porn industry (specifically the Los Angeles porn industry) from the INSIDE!

How do we know this? Well, no one could POSSIBLY consistently screw up the reputation of an entire industry like he has!

More to come!

Man called top U.S. child porn peddler arrested in Plymouth Township

A 24-year-old man accused of illegally sharing child pornography online — considered by authorities to be the largest and most active trader in the country using peer-to-peer software — was arrested in Plymouth Township, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office announced today.

Tavis Greene of Monroe was arraigned Sunday on 12 felony counts related to possession and distribution of child pornography. He was arrested Dec. 9 at a friend’s Plymouth Township home where he was staying.

According to a news release, investigators found evidence of child pornographic materials — some children in those materials appear as young as 10 — on a computer belonging to Greene.

Greene’s case was forwarded to the Michigan Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force in April from the Colorado Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. At training on peer-to-peer software in May, officers began comparing notes with other investigators throughout the country on someone from Michigan who appeared to be engaging in illegal file sharing activities. A detective on the Colorado ICAC Task Force was able to gain access to the password-protected folder that contained child pornography and determined it belonged to Greene.

Michigan ICAC officers obtained search warrants for the Plymouth Township home and arrested Greene.

“Tracking this individual was our highest priority because the next level of offense is physically abusing a child and we can’t let that happen,” Sheriff Benny N. Napoleon said in a news release. “Thanks to the expansive network of web investigators we’re putting these individuals on notice—you can’t hide behind technology.”

Authorities said Greene’s computer appears to contain thousands of images. Greene posted a $100,000 cash bond and is expected to be back in court Dec. 19.

Why is an award winning pro Los Angeles Porn industry blog endorsing PEDOPHILIA?

(editorial by PornNewsToday.com)

Today an award winning porn industry blog - which promotes, supports and endorses the Los Angeles porn industry specifically made a bold move by promoting a documentary which attempts to rationalize and normalize sexual activity with minors - pedophilia.

The owner of the blog - Cindi Loftus writes the following:

"NL-I watched a shortened version of this documentary. It starts off with "What is the difference between you and a pedophile?" This documentary maker looks throughout history to find that adults have always had sex with children and that it was acceptable in the past. (Think Greece & Rome) And this behavior of young sex does continue in tribal societies. Teen modeling, priests and women as pedophiles are all discussed. Opinions (done as a voice over) were stated and presented as facts, which with this subject matter is a bit scary. The interviews with pedophiles were eye opening and frightening. Worth watching for sure. I found the doc very interesting and informative."

Cindi Loftus conducted an interview as well with the producer of the movie - Jan-Willem Breure.

The trailer for the documentary can be found on http://areallmenpedophiles.com/

It's my personal opinion that all men are not pedophiles - only emotionally dysfunctional males are. Pedophilia and/or sexual relations with minors never will be viewed as "normal" in evolved society.

Condoms in porn vote splits L.A. attorney, council

courtesy: SFgate.com

A ballot measure requiring porn companies in Los Angeles to use condoms during film shoots has pitted City Attorney Carmen Trutanich against several City Council members in a debate focused on actor safety and taxpayer funds.

Trutanich last week filed a lawsuit against backers of the measure, seeing it as unnecessary and a potential waste of city resources.

But the move surprised the council and angered several members who support providing workplace protections to adult performers.

City Councilmen Paul Koretz and Bill Rosendahl introduced a motion this week that attempts to quash the lawsuit.

"We shouldn't be suing to thwart the opinions of people of Los Angeles who signed this," Koretz said.

Already, there's a law on the books mandating condom use on film sets, although it is not vigorously enforced.

If the initiative is ultimately challenged by the porn industry and thrown out, the city will have wasted money and time on preparing the ballot initiative, Trutanich argues.

Calling the initiative a "needless and wasteful expenditure of public resources," the lawsuit asks the court to immediately relieve the city clerk from preparing the ballot measure.

Assistant City Attorney Valerie Flores said the city is likely to face a costly lawsuit from the pornography industry if the measure becomes law. She said the city attorney's office wanted to get legal clarification from the courts about whether the city had the authority to enforce the measure, but insisted the suit does not necessarily mean Trutanich opposes the substance of the proposal.

Gene Ross of AdultFYI confirms that Monica Foster was correct about the PornWikiLeaks issue not being over

Gene Ross of AdultFYI has confirmed what ex-pornstar Monica Foster has been speaking and writing about for many months now. The Pornwikileaks issue was never resolved, nor is it close to being over - in fact it is back under a different guise.

article below courtesy Gene Ross of AdultFYI.com

I hate to say I told you so, but in one of my Tarot readings I told you so. When all the industry cowboys were taking credit for rounding up the scamps at Porn Wikileaks and driving them out of Dodge, I said Porn Wiki Leaks wasn’t going anywhere.

Of course I took a ration for saying that because, after all, what do my Tarot cards know. But, months, later, seems I was right. Porn Wikileaks has resurfaced but in a re-incarnated form that appears more toxic than the original ever was.

The new trouble maker in town is calling itself Dirty Wiki, www.dirtywiki.com

I believe the site’s been up a couple of months and is still in its formative stages. From the looks of it, though, it’s way more sophisticated than Porn Wiki Leaks.

And it’s designed to look exactly like Wikipedia. The site’s home page currently features twenty thumbnails of women in the spotlight that perhaps they wish they weren’t in.

Some are porn performers. Some are escorts. Evidently some are girlfriends who’s pissed off ex-boyfriends. But they all have one thing in common. If they’ve run afoul of the law, their police records are up there. And if they have families, information about mothers, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles are up there, too. It looks like someone’s been raiding Facebook and other Internet social sources for information and photos.

Considering that no one’s bothered to make an issue of it, we thought we’d be the first to let you know. Fasten your seat belts. This could really be a bumpy ride.

Pornstar promoter Howard Stern to host family friendly America's Got Talent ?

courtesy NYdailynews.com
Howard Stern is going prime-time.

The hugely popular radio morning man will join NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” next season as part of an overhaul of the show that will include moving it to New York.

Stern has been talking about taking the job since CNN host Piers Morgan said he would leave the show

last month.

“I take judging very seriously,” Stern told his SiriusXM Satellite Radio listeners Thursday morning.

He said he was signing the contract on the air as he talked.

NBC followed with the official announcement.

“Howard Stern’s larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic to ‘America's Got Talent’ starting this summer,” said Paul Telegdy, president of alternative and late-night programming at NBC. “He’s a proven innovator and his track record in broadcasting is truly remarkable. Howard is very passionate about this show and is fully committed to its future success.”

The show, which has been Los Angeles-based since its inception, will move to New York to accommodate Stern’s arrival.

He also will continue to host his radio show.

Stern, a pop-culture aficionado, has long had a good relationship with “America’s Got Talent” executive producer Simon Cowell. He told listeners his wife, Beth, told him he’d be a brilliant judge, too.

He’s also talked extensively over the years about wanting to be a judge on either “America’s Got Talent” or “American Idol.”

It’s also a return to the company that fired him earlier in his career. Stern noted on the air that all those folks were gone now, and it is a new era at NBC.

Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel are the other judges on the competition show, which features acts with a variety of skills from singing to plate twirling. Nick Cannon is the host.

“America’s Got Talent” was the top-rated nonsports series on NBC, ABC or CBS during the summer. Indeed, last summer was its best run ever.

Getting Stern into the mix immediately adds an extra level of buzz for the series.

Stern likely will use his radio show to talk about “America’s Got Talent.” Likewise, his appearance on the show alone is expected to draw new viewers to the series. Indeed, he said on Sirius he could get his listeners to show up.

When Morgan announced he was leaving the show, Stern immediately began talking about wanting the job. The watchdog group Parents Television Council quickly said his hire would be bad for humanity. No doubt that drumbeat will continue, helping pull even more viewers to the show.

No shock, by lunchtime Thursday the PTC was accusing NBC of “desperation and having lost its way. The group labeled Stern “a performer who is synonymous with shock, profanity and obscenity.”

While it’s true that on radio, Stern delivers a funny, biting and often racy view on pop culture

the PTC did not mention that NBC must conform to broadcast network standards, has an active standards and practices department, and that Stern has proven repeatedly he can play under the guidelines of the medium.

Strip Club Fired Waitress Because She is Black

from www.reuters.com - A Maine strip club wrongfully fired a waitress because she is black, the state civil rights commission said, and the agency told the club it may have to offer compensation or rehire her.

The Maine Human Rights Commission, which investigated the case, said PT's Showclub in Portland should not have fired Cecilia Smith, who was hired in February 2010.

At the time, the club's manager was away. When the manager returned a week later and saw Smith, he fired her. Smith was initially told it was because she was overweight, according to the report.

When Smith pointed out that other workers were bigger than her, a supervisor told her, "I'll be very blunt with you, your weight and your skin complexion is not the image that the boss wants to have in this club."

PT's Showclub said Smith was dismissed because she "did not meet the minimum appearance qualifications especially concerning weight and beauty," and that she could reapply for her job if she lost weight.

The club did not immediately respond to a telephone message seeking comment.

The agency said the club and Smith must meet in mediation to try to reach a settlement. If they are unable to agree, the state agency may join Smith in filing a lawsuit against the club, said Cindy Albert, a case controller with the Maine Human Rights Commission.

The club is part of a chain of adult entertainment venues owned by Colorado-based VCG Holdings, according to a report by the state agency.

Orthodox Jewish Website Hacked With Porn

courtesy Xbiz.com

TEL AVIV, Israel — An ultra-Orthodox Jewish website was shut down for hours recently after hackers replaced photos of rabbis and religious articles with porn.

Ynet News reported that after the Behadrei Haredim website was discovered showing porn late at night, operators received a barrage of phone calls, forcing them to take the site offline.

One of the shocked surfers, Shan Tova, said the site contained "not the best films in the world."

Website manager Dov Poversky said he had no idea who hacked the site, and although there were several attempts in the past to hijack the content, this was the first success.

"We must be too powerful, and therefore someone decided to hurt us and drop a stink bomb on the website," Poversky said.

He added, "At this stage I can't rule out anyone being behind it, from politicians to people hurt by the website. I believe we'll eventually know who's responsible."

The Behadrei Haredim is considered the "black sheep" of ultra-Orthodox media because of its open criticism against different issues in the haredi dialogue that traces its roots back to Moses and considers other sects deviations from authentic Judaism.

Does porn culture distort our body image?

Photo courtesy AVN.com - these 3 gross and unhealthy looking
pornstars make me feel great about how I look.
(Monica Foster commentary: It's never distorted my body image - if anything "porn culture" makes me thank God that I look the way I do - athletic, fit, healthy and all natural...if you really take a look at pornstars now days they are gross in appearance for the most part - too much botox, tattoos, plastic surgery, and not physically fit or healthy at ALL.)

courtesy SMH.com.au

Porn has been blamed for a lot of things: waning sex lives, addiction, the objectification of women, and so on.

But what about blaming porn culture for distorting the desired body image of the rest of the female population? Seriously? Because, if you're dating a man who insists you should look like a porn star, there's something seriously amiss.

A bunch of British feminists beg to differ. By their reckoning, porn is the reason not only for the growth in the obsession with removing all remnants of female pubic hair, but it is now being blamed for the rise in female plastic surgery down there.

Yep, according to "the Muffia" – the group of British feminists protesting against porn and its influence on young women, porn is the reason for the increase of surgery to create a "designer vagina". Which, by the way, is on the increase, at least in the US and in Britain where genital cosmetic surgery among women has risen five-fold in the past 10 years.

As the Muffia's Facebook page reads: "Tired of cosmetic surgeons profiting from body hatred? Want to speak out against a porn culture that is driving more and more women to the surgeon's table to get a 'designer vagina'? Then join the Muff March!"

The Guardian newspaper reported over the weekend that these women took to the streets of London as part of the aptly named Muff March, hoping to raise awareness among women with low self-esteem when it comes to their private bits.

As protester Rosie Mockett wrote in the newspaper: "We object to the intrusion of pornified culture into our everyday lives, but we also object to the unregulated and unnecessary practice of these procedures by private surgeons and the unashamed profiteering resulting from female body hatred."

Shelley Lubben shares more truths about pornography

In this informative - yet disturbing video piece, Shelley Lubben shares the dangers and dark side of the Los Angeles porn industry.

To Thwart Porn, Colleges Are Buying Up .XXX Sites

courtesy Associated Press.com

The University of Kansas is buying up website names such as http://www.KUgirls.xxx and http://www.KUnurses.xxx. But not because it’s planning a Hot Babes of Kansas site or an X-rated gallery of the Nude Girls of the Land of Aaahs.

Instead, the university and countless other schools and businesses are rushing to prevent their good names from falling into the hands of the pornography industry. Over the past two months, they have snapped up tens of thousands of “.xxx” website names that could be exploited by the adult entertainment business.

(MORE: The .XXX Porn Domains Have Landed)

“Down the road there’s no way we can predict what some unscrupulous entrepreneur might come up with,” said Paul Vander Tuig, trademark licensing director at the Lawrence, Kan., school.

The university spent nearly $3,000 in all. It plans to sit on the .xxx names and do nothing with them.

The brand-new .xxx suffix is an adults-only variation on .com. The .xxx name went on sale to the public for the first time this week, promoted as a way to enable porn sites to distinguish themselves and a means of making it easier for Internet filters to screen out things parents don’t want their children to see.

ICM Registry of Palm Beach, Fla., is the exclusive manager of the .xxx names and sells them through a dozen middleman companies such as GoDaddy.com for an average of $100 a year.

Indiana University spokesman Mark Land said the school spent $2,200 to buy http://www.hoosiers.xxxand 10 other such names. Other Indiana schools took the same step, including Purdue University and Ball State University.

“This is just a modest cost of doing business in the world we live in,” Land said.

ICM sold .xxx names for the past two months exclusively to companies and others that wanted to protect their brands from the porn industry. During the so-called sunrise sale, ICM registered nearly 80,000 names, said chairman and CEO Stuart Lawley.

A search of ICM’s database finds prominent brand names – including Nike.xxx, Pepsi.xxx and Target.xxx – among those purchased.

“Target has applied to block a number of the .xxx domains that correspond with our registered trademarks,” said Lee Henderson, a spokesman for the Minneapolis-based store chain. He added, dryly: “We do not plan to use the domains.”

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, which the U.S. government established in 1998 to run the Internet’s address system, authorized creation of .xxx earlier this year.

The strongest opposition to the suffix has come from the adult entertainment industry. The Free Speech Coalition, the industry’s trade group, lobbied against its creation, complaining among other things about the registration fees.

Allison Vivas, president and CEO of Pink Visual Productions, an adult website operator in Van Nuys, Calif., said her company and others like it were also given the chance to buy up .xxx sites matching their existing .com addresses, but Vivas and many others opted not to.

Vivas said she doesn’t think her company – or any organization, adult-oriented or not – should have to pay to protect its trademarks. Otherwise, “it kind of becomes extortion.”

Lawley said ICM will take steps to protect existing trademarks even if companies or schools fail to lock down certain website names.
