Porn sites account for XXX-tra real estate on Web: 30% of all Internet traffic, report finds

Monica Foster commentary: I personally believe this percentage in actuality may be a bit higher. Another thing to note, is that it's adult entertainment (porn), which is a HUGE factor in the advancement of online technology. One has to wonder if over the years the push for clearer and more highly compressed streaming video would have ever reached the level of which it has if there were not such a vast (and lucrative) demand for online pornography.
About 11 years ago a man by the name of Eliot Bernstein is said to have invented a technology that revolutionized the delivery and quality of online video called IViewIt. Unfortunately the patenting and technology was allegedly stolen by Proskauer Rose, Kenneth Rubenstein and a company called MPEG LA - I invite you all to read about this situation by clicking here to read Crystal L. Cox's article on the matter...

Isn't it interesting that porn industry attorney Marc Randazza is involved in a dispute with Crystal L. Cox - the woman who's been bringing attention to the IviewIt issue for quite some time now...
I assume that the porn industry is HEAVILY dependent upon the IviewIt technology which was allegedly stolen (how dependent, I'm not certain yet, but I am currently investigating). If those allegations were ever proven to be correct, can you imagine how heavily effected the entertainment industry (specifically the porn industry) would be financially?

XXX marks the spot on the Internet.

Researchers have found that a whopping 30% of all Internet traffic involves pornographic sites, with the biggest one notching three times the page views of CNN or ESPN, ExtremeTech reported.

That site, Xvideos, notches 4.4 billion page views per month, also making it twice the size of social media giant Reddit, according to Google's DoubleClick Ad Planner.

But porn sites aren't just attractive to Internet users, they also boast (ahem) staying power.

The typical news site has an average visit of between three and six minutes, according to Extreme Tech's report. The average time spent on a porn site, meanwhile, is somewhere between 15 and 20 minutes.

Considering these sites deal largely with videos, even if they are low resolution videos — hey it's not like the production value is the main draw — a vast amount of data is being hosted.

Reps for YouPorn, the second biggest sex site, told Extreme Tech that the site enjoys 100 million page views a day and transfers 950 terabytes daily.

The bandwidth required to run all of those videos on YouPorn is roughly six times larger than Hulu.

Based on those numbers, the report estimated that YouPorn accounts for 2% of Internet traffic and using that number, ExtremeTech calculates a conservative figure of 30% for all the pornography-related traffic on the Internet.
